In our days. The father of the EMERCOM major—and also the friend of senior investigator Volin, Yuri Varlamov—goes missing. To find him, the friends will have to look back into the past, in particular learn the fate of Volin’s older teacher, Andrey Ivanovich Mazur.
August 1944. The First Belorussian Front is fighting the German-Fascist troops on Polish territory. On the basis of a slanderous tip, a special department of the army’s headquarters opens a case against the military intelligence officer, senior lieutenant Andrey Mazur. The charges are very serious; Mazur faces a long prison sentence—or even execution. The case is handled by Captain Yelagin of the NKVD, and—by a surprising whim of fate—he is Mazur’s school friend. He understands that Mazur isn’t guilty of what he is being accused of, but he can’t just close the case and let Lieutenant go—otherwise Yelagin himself will come under the blow.
