The famous work of the outstanding Russian historian Sergey Mikhailovich Solovyov (1820–1879) is rightfully regarded as one of the main achievements of Russian historical scholarship of the 19th century. Solovyov is the “first among equals” in the constellation of the greatest researchers of Russian history, alongside whom stand N. Karamzin, V. Klyuchevsky, N. Kostomarov, A. Presnyakov, T. Granovsky, S. Platonov, and many others.
