“The Conquest of Plassans” (1874) is Émile Zola’s fourth novel in the “Rougon-Macquart” cycle, devoted to representatives of a single family living during the years of the Second Empire—the period of Napoleon III’s dictatorship. In many respects, this book is a continuation of the cycle’s first novel. The action again takes place in the fictional Provençal city of Plassans, and its plot revolves around the attempt of a visiting abbé Fohé to bring the entire city under his control. “Ferocious passion under a kindly appearance” is how Gustave Flaubert characterized the tone of the novel.
