1921. Sources close to the Ministry of Finance claim that in Russia there is an underground organization stealing state valuables from the Gokhran of the RSFSR. Moreover, the head of this gang is a man who knows jewelry and precious stones well. The stolen gold and diamonds, it is assumed, are to be sent to Reval — a transfer base for currency dealers and White émigrés. The investigation of this dangerous and confusing case is assigned to a young Chekist, Vsevolod Vladimirov, the future Isaev — Stierlitz.
