Spring of 1941. After Yugoslavia joins the “anti-Comintern” pact of Germany, Italy, and Japan, a state coup takes place in the country. A government led by General Simović comes to power—one more sympathetic to Great Britain and the USA than to the “Axis” powers. For Hitler, Yugoslavia’s fate is decided, despite the fact that Simović confirmed his government’s commitment to all previous agreements. German troops are concentrated near the Yugoslav border. To prepare the ground for an invasion, a “trade delegation” of the standartenführer Weesemayer arrives in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, whose track record includes the coming to power in Slovakia of a Germany-loyal government. Similar tasks face him this time as well—playing on national contradictions between Serbs and Croats and bringing pro-German forces to power in Zagreb. Among the members of the “delegation” is a Soviet agent SS standartenführer Stirlitz, who in the current circumstances has new tasks—undermining the activities of Weesemayer’s group.
