A certain Eugene Pour visits Wolfe together with his wife and claims that his partner wants to squeeze him out of their joint business; if he refuses, the partner will kill him. He believes his death is practically inevitable—and that his partner is smart enough to avoid punishment. Wolfe’s task is that, if the client is killed, he should tell the police about this conversation. That same evening, a radio report says that Eugene Pour was killed at home by an explosion. Now, to earn his fee, Wolfe only needs to inform the police about the visit that happened the day before.
But Wolfe isn’t sure everything is really that simple…
