A large company hires Wolfe to investigate the circumstances of a corporate employee’s death after being hit by a car. The police version is that it was an accident. Archie Goodwin goes, for a week, to the funds department disguised as a new employee in order to assess the situation. When an employee of the corporation is killed under the wheels of a car—someone insisting on the murder theory—it becomes clear that the first death cannot be explained as an accident. Archie sets up dates with female employees of the company, hoping to obtain useful information and have a pleasant time. But only Wolfe manages to get confessions from the witnesses.
