A Parisian cook, Mondor, comes to visit Wolfe and asks him to show the American national game number one—baseball. Entertaining the guest is the host’s sacred duty. So Mondor and Wolfe, taking Goodwin along as a sports commentator, end up at the stadium. From the very beginning, the game goes wrong. Wolfe has to sit on a wooden bench, while the “Giants”—Goodwin’s idols—crawl around the field like drunkards. Later it turns out that they really are drugged with barbiturates, and one of the players from the team is found dead in the shower room.
Wolfe shakes the stadium owner out of the only convenient chair, firmly sits down in it, and starts arguing with the police, while Goodwin, like crazy, runs around the city searching for the killer…
