Inspector Kremer comes to Vulf’s office. In the inspector’s hands is a box containing several ears of corn. In the inspector’s pocket is an arrest order for Goodwin on suspicion of murder. It turns out that the one who was killed was a driver who delivered food from McLeod’s farm to Vulf’s kitchen. McLeod’s daughter, a beauty named Susan, tells the police that the dead man had made advances toward her hand and heart. In fact, the beautiful woman was trying to spin romances with four men at once—and Goodwin was among them. Susan claims that Goodwin arranged a date for her—in the place and at the time when the murder took place.
