The story begins in 1941, during the German occupation of Norway. In the country’s northernmost outskirts, in remote and sparsely populated Sør-Varanger, immense military forces concentrate in just a few months—hundreds of thousands of German and Austrian soldiers. The situation favors adventurers, criminals, traitors, and spies of all kinds. But one honest policeman is fighting desperately and hopelessly against the chaos, defending fair order as best he can. In these difficult times, he has to track down the trail of a cold-blooded and merciless killer—one he will never manage to catch. The criminal will slip away to the Svalbard archipelago. Half a century later, war veterans in the Arctic will gather to remember their youth in battle. Everything points to the fact that the cruel Killer from the past has been hiding all this time—and now he has turned up at the meeting of old comrades.
