The Dutch Grave

The Dutch Grave

9 hrs. 45 min.
This psychological thriller takes place, as do the other books by Norwegian writer Monica Kristensen published in the series “Arctic Criminal Novel,” on the island of Svalbard. The author knows Svalbard firsthand: she arrived at the archipelago for the first time in 1976, repeatedly stayed there for wintering, and for some time held the position of director of the scientific station “Kings Bay.” That’s why she manages to depict so convincingly one of the most remote and calm places on the planet, where nothing seems able to disturb the measured life of the small community—except the weather. However, even here, a mysterious, cruel, unpredictable murder can occur. And it all begins with the first landing of tourists, who came on a cruise ship “White Bear” and visited Bird Island, where—more than 200 years ago—Dutch and English whalers lived. The only thing left of them is a cemetery with several rows of wooden coffins that were once buried in permafrost, but now their lids can be seen. When tourists lift one of them, they find a human head inside the coffin. And it clearly did not belong to a Dutch whaler.
