In these difficult times, fate threw our contemporary Mikhail Karpov into the thick of things. Oh, the difficult… And for how many years already he has been proving it to himself. The seventies, the Cold War, a growing international conflict, uncertainty about tomorrow. And only Karpov knows what’s ahead.

Nixon’s visit to the Soviet Union in 1972 was supposed to become a new step in building friendly relations between the USA and the USSR. But everything went wrong. A terrorist attack occurred—a powerful explosion meant to kill Nixon, Shelepin, and Semichastny. Karpov managed to react only at the very last moment and prevented the worst.

Terrifying to imagine what consequences the sabotage could have led to—another stage of the Cold War? Or a full-scale Third World War?

The worst is behind. But the country will no longer be the same. Semichastny and Shelepin are preparing a “bomb” that is meant to explode at an upcoming congress. The creation of a State Committee for a State of Emergency is inevitable, and its consequences will be irreversible. The air is already filled with the scent of change. But no one fully understands where it will ultimately lead. Not even Mikhail Karpov himself…
