In postwar Kazan, in a forest park, they find a man’s body with his throat cut and a finger severed—apparently to remove the wedding ring. Forensics show the murder was carried out with a medical scalpel, suggesting a medical worker may be involved. Police major Vitaliy Shchelkoun learns that the victim, Konstantin Polyakov, a teacher, had known surgeon Goryunov, and during a search they discover the missing ring with the surgeon. Although the criminal seems to have been found, the major continues the investigation because he notices suspicious behavior from Polyakov’s wife, who apparently isn’t too upset about her husband’s death.
