A successful uprising of the Don Cossacks, Zaporozhians, Little Russians, and Astrakhan riflemen broke away several regions from the Russian Empire. For some, it was joy; for others, disaster—new prospects and problems. Under the leadership of the young Emperor Alexei Petrovich Romanov, the Russian Empire reduces the army, carries out reforms, and expands into Siberia. And because of the conflict in the Caspian Sea, the Don Cossacks get drawn into a war with Persia.

The ancient Persian state is in a difficult position. The uprising of the Afghans and the struggle with the Arabs divert their forces away from the Caspian region. Therefore, the Cossacks and Astrakhan people, having made an agreement of friendship with the mountaineers of the North Caucasus, win victory after victory. And along the way, the Cossacks help the Little Russians and Hetman Mazepa fend off attacks by the Poles.

The main hero—a man from the future who ends up in the body of Nikiphor Bulavin—forms his own squad and attacks Persian cities. Nikiphor proves to be a fortunate leader. His campaigns bring him fame and profit. He continues to help the Cossack ataman, his father, takes part in reforms, keeps in contact with the Russian emperor Alexei Petrovich, makes small changes in the lives of the peoples, and builds a fortress on the border of the Don Host with the Kuban nomads. He also marries and gathers connections. That is his life, and he is satisfied with it.
