People love to conquer Mother Nature. Even the peasants from some fantasy backwater preferred new crop-planting technologies to the hope in a she-wolf goddess named Holo, who had guarded their harvest for thousands of years. The goddess became bored and heartbroken—but only people who had long forgotten the ancient contract could cancel it. And then, completely unexpectedly, someone named Lawrence freed her—a young man who is tall, clever, and quick-witted, because that’s what wandering traders are like. Taking the form of a young girl (with very cute ears and a tail), the goddess made Lawrence an offer he couldn’t refuse: take her home, to the North, promising that the young merchant wouldn’t be left at a loss.
So Holo and Lawrence set off slowly to the North—but the road ahead would be long and troubling. Aristocrats and clergymen, merchants and policemen, abandoned girls and local “tough guys”—everyone has something to say about the poor merchant and his strange companion. By force of circumstances, the travelers have to consider the proposals that come in, because both of them have the kind of profession where you help people!
