Edith Pargeter, known by the pen name Ellis Peters, created a popular detective series set in the 12th century in England and Wales. The series is connected with historical events of that time, such as the civil war between Matilda and Stephen of Blois. The main plotlines unfold in the town of Shrewsbury and its surroundings, as well as in the Benedictine abbey. The main hero is Brother Cadfael, a former crusader who investigates crimes and saves souls despite his peaceful intentions.
