“The Evening of the Century” is the final book of the trilogy “Holy Rus’” by the famous writer Dmitry Mikhailovich Balashov (1927–2000), from his renowned cycle of historical novels “Moscow Rulers.” It covers the period from 1387 to 1399 in the development of Rus’, when several important events took place and found their reflection in the novel. These include the struggle for the metropolitan throne after the death of Metropolitan Alexy, the deaths of the legendary Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy (1389) and Sergius of Radonezh (1391/92), as well as two battles: in 1395, on the Terek River, the armies of the Golden Horde under Khan Tokhtamysh were defeated by Emir Timur (Tamerlane); and in 1399, on the Vorsklа River, the combined forces of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vitovt and Tokhtamysh were broken by Timur Kutlug, the appointee of Tamerlane. The consequences of these battles, directly tied to the fate of medieval Rus’, contributed to the strengthening of the Russian state.
