During the house reconstruction, from above, a construction beam falls onto a parked car nearby, damaging the vehicle and breaking the owner’s leg. The investigator Orest Volin is assigned to handle the case of this incident. At the scene, Volin discovers an old hiding place filled with worn, lined notebooks—among them one with the heading “Overseer of the Court. The Case of Zeli-Sultan.” The contents of the notebook were an encrypted text written in pre-reform orthography from the early 20th century. Volin hands the notebook to an old acquaintance: a retired major of the FSB, a historian and specialist in ciphers.
