Tara of Helium is the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris. At her father’s court she receives potential suitors—including Jor Cantos, the son of Cantos Kahn. Most of all, she doesn’t like the ruler of faraway Gathol—Jed Gahan—wearing armor adorned with diamonds. A princess’s whim leads to an airborne прогулка in which she gets caught in a hurricane. The hurricane carries Tara to the country of Bantum, inhabited by dreadful creatures calling themselves Kaldans. The Kaldans are dry intellectuals, resembling a giant head fitted with spider legs. Since the Kaldans consist of one brain and can hardly move, they have developed a special breed of domestic animals: former slaves with their heads removed; they are called rikors. A Kaldan rides a rikor and connects to its nervous system, after which it can do whatever it pleases. Tara was able to win over one of the Kaldans, named Chek, with her singing, and he helps her escape.
