A novel set during wartime, about complex fates and dangerous work of unknown heroes who were included in the ударный composition (“shock unit”) of Beria’s special forces. A special aircraft drops a group of Lieutenant Colonel Maxim Shelestov on the border of Belarus and Lithuania. Here, in one of the villages, a squad of saboteurs carrying out a special mission for the Abwehr in our rear is blocked. The enemy offers fierce resistance and refuses to surrender. Shelestov finds out that under a German name, the leader of the squad is a traitor, Vasily Fedorchuk. At the beginning of the war the bandit, pretending to be dead, managed to slip away from the operatives. This time, the betrayer of the Motherland won’t escape retribution…
“ This series is good because it carries out the correct key idea: in the NKVD under Lavrenty Beria they knew how to trust people, because the commissar himself knew how to believe in people. The story of Major Shelestov’s group is similar to the real story of a major Abwehr agent—former штабс-капітан of the tsarist army Nelydov—who ended up on Lubyanka in September 1939. Against the background of Nelydov’s story, Maxim Shelestov’s adventures and those of his comrades described in this novel look even more plausible.” —
