We’re looking at a modified world of the late 18th century. On the Russian throne is still Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. In this world, instead of the Bering Strait, there is a land bridge of the same name; carriages are pulled by magimechanical horses; aristocrats have magical talents; and their serfs have orcs who obediently perform corvée.

It is to such Russia that Konstantin Urusov—an undertrained would-be mage—travels from Paris to claim an inheritance and jump-start a career that has not exactly gone well. Returning to his historical roots proves not so simple. There are problems with the inheritance; to develop his magical gift he will have to work hard, and it’s also easy to get killed in one of the duels our hero is so “lucky” to get into.

In the fourth book, Konstantin Urusov faces another twist in his career. Falling out of favor with the Empress is always extremely dangerous. And on top of that, his enemies want to take advantage of the moment to seize Zlobino, which Konstantin inherited. Meanwhile, he receives a special gift directly from Death and plans to enlist the support of the Secret Chancellery—one that he has plenty to offer.
