May 1916… Last summer the enemy, at the cost of incredible efforts, was stopped. And all this time, he was frantically digging his rat-holes—turning them afterward into concreted machine-gun and cannon emplacements, dugouts, and casemates—calling his creations in a pompously Teutonic way “Valleys of Death,” “The Graves of the Russians”… They say that from the Baltic to the Black Sea you could walk through without ever crawling out of the trenches…

And now everything is coming back to life. He has warmed up in the spring sun, waiting for when Russian soldiers will go on the attack again—getting tangled in Bruno’s spirals and hanging on barbed wire in bloody chunks under machine-gun fire…

Only one detail escaped him: in the Russian Imperial Army there is a 1st separate Naroch battalion commanded by Captain Gurov. And this battalion fights the way it sees fit—not the way the Germans expect. Which means that the shout “Forward, to the West!” will make them tremble already in the First World War…
