Balzac combined the novels “Cousin Bette” and “Cousin Pons” under the single title “Poor Relations.” Completely different in plot, these two works are linked by the unity of their main theme: the devastating consequences, for a human personality, of a dependent and humiliating position of a poor relation.
In “Cousin Bette,” this leads to envy, bitterness, and an unstoppable desire for revenge.
Pons’s tragic fate in a world where everything is subordinated to the pursuit of wealth is only natural. The owner of beautiful paintings becomes a victim of the dirtiest schemes and vile crimes.
