Off the coast of the state of Maine there is a small island where almost everyone is a fisherman. Here lives Janet King, a respectable woman who sells crab meat and is doing her best to stay afloat—especially after her divorce from the dissolute Simon.
One foggy night, Janet wakes to a loud commotion and is astonished to realize that, at the dock, the engine of the barge that she shared with her former husband is running. But Simon isn’t on board… Instead, soon a troublesome teenager, Joey Piciо, hands her a substantial sum—allegedly money meant for Simon.
Then trouble pours in one after another: the grim businessman Bennett Tyson demands the money be returned, and afterward Janet finds Joey’s body—half-submerged—in a creek. The investigation draws in more and more colorful characters, and soon it becomes clear that the criminal network reaches all the way to the highest levels—up to the governor himself. Who killed Joey? Who interferes with the lawful eel fishery? And where has Simon disappeared to?
