1974. Under mysterious circumstances, Igor Garanin, a senior official of the Ministry of Medium Machine Building, dies. Investigators do not rule out that it is a killing skillfully staged as a suicide.

Soon, another death occurs—Evgeny Lisovets, an official connected to the defense industry, is killed.

At first glance, there seems to be no connection between the two cases, but KGB Major Nikita Platov is convinced that these events are links in a single chain.
