Maxim Kammerer (the hero of the novella “A Repaired Island”) works on Earth for the Commission for Control (COMCON-2). One day his boss, Rudolf Sikorsky, gives him an assignment: find on Earth Lev Abalkin, a progressor. Abalkin has witnessed a murder and has a mental spasm. The search leads Maxim to a mystery of Abalkin’s identity. At the same time, Abalkin himself tries to understand what has been hidden from him his entire life. They will inevitably meet.
