Well, I ended up there—right, in the past. And the time on the calendar couldn’t be more cheerful: summer of 1941. And things started rolling. Reserve regiment—front line—retreat—encirclement… And staying in this deadly whirl is terrifying, and jumping off it is even worse. But I managed—I wriggled out, got myself attached to a warm place, only it turned out not to be very warm. If not bullets, then shrapnel from German bombs keeps trying to drive itself into the coffin. And it’s unclear whether I’ll manage to return back or whether I’ll have to settle permanently in this uncomfortable world. We’ll see—time will tell.
