Venezuela is a country with an astonishingly rich past: from ancient cultures and the era of Spanish conquest to the wars of the 19th–20th centuries and today’s political turbulence. The new book in the “History in Your Fingertips” series will be your guide to the history and modern-day reality of Venezuela.
How often do you think about Venezuela? Chances are, not very often—or maybe you haven’t even given it a thought until the recent news about the kidnapping of President Maduro?
Meanwhile, this country has a rich and dramatic history. Indigenous peoples—Chibcha, Caribs, Arawaks, Guajiros—with their languages, beliefs, farming traditions, and methods of building were pushed out and, in many cases, destroyed by Spanish conquerors, who established themselves on the continent for a long time. But after independence, calm still did not arrive: the 19th and 20th centuries unfolded under the banner of wars, coups, and revolutions. And today, as it seems, Venezuela remains in an extremely unstable political situation.
The new book in the “History in Your Fingertips” series will help you look into the country’s past and understand the present—taking you through the streets of Caracas and introducing you to Venezuelans’ traditions.
