Life in the small mountain village of Sotoba flows quietly. Soon, an epidemic begins in the village. A strange illness steals people’s strength and they fall asleep—never to wake again. The local doctor tries, without success, to uncover the mystery of this disease and save the dying.

Meanwhile, rumors spread across the village about the dead rising from their graves.

How is the family from the hill connected to this? And what will the local schoolchildren—led by Natsuno Yuki, who first noticed these oddities—do? Questions grow more and more, and the answers to them still have to be discovered…
