Bob Lee Swagger returns to a case half a century old. It is not even a lead… It is a whisper, a trace, a ghostly echo that has rolled through the decades, yet so fragile that it could be destroyed by a careless breath.
But that is enough for the legendary former Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger to take an interest in the events of November 22, 1963, and the third bullet that irrevocably cut short the life of John F. Kennedy and gave rise to the most controversial mystery of our time.
Swagger sets out on an unhurried trek across a dark field long since trampled over, yet he asks questions that few have asked before: why did the third bullet explode? Why did Lee Harvey Oswald, the most hunted man in the world, risk everything to return home and get a revolver he could easily have taken with him earlier? How was a conspiracy that remained undiscovered for fifty years prepared in the two and a half days between the announcement of Kennedy’s route and the assassination itself?
As Bob’s investigation unfolds, another voice appears in the narrative: knowledgeable, ironic, almost familiar — Yale graduate and veteran of the CIA’s Planning Directorate Hugh Meachum, with his secrets, as well as the means and the will to keep them buried. Compared with all his legacy, Swagger’s life is worth nothing, so to eliminate the threat Meachum must lure Swagger into an ambush.
The two hunt each other across the globe, and through the layers of history, “The Third Bullet” drives toward an explosive finale, revealing to the world what Bob Lee Swagger has always known: it is never too late for justice.
