The Zone-obsessed stalker, who has even forgotten his own name, emerges into the Middle Belt (a kind of buffer between the central areas and the outskirts of the Zone). On the way he gains two friends: the Zone’s Black Dogs—mutants. Together they hunt, fight for the right to live, and bother their neighbors—unfortunately—who are only slightly dead… zombies. The stalker develops a habit of chatting with unfortunate, eternally hungry neighbors—because you want to talk, and there isn’t anyone else. One day, with surprise, he discovers there are other living people in the Zone.

He also learns that he is no longer quite like other people. The stalker goes to a local trader, makes friends with such wonderful people as Damba, Luck, Khmyr… and receives a task to destroy a Debt group. In the process, he will meet the Zone’s bandits—very polite, not exactly well-mannered, and almost good people. Together with the hero of the book, you’ll find yourself among the Zone bandits’ collective, see the Zone’s winter, and meet many wonderful individuals, anomalies, and mutants.
