One among many, alien among aliens. And only an old rifle, a pair of knives, and a backpack full of stuff are yours. Plus an adopted, crippled puppy.

And what? And nothing. You’re used to fighting aboard a spaceship. They trained you for this perfectly. They drilled into you that ahead everything is crying and behind everything is burning. But brawling on a dirty street isn’t different from ship combat—except for the rate of fire. Still, the main thing isn’t who shoots more, it’s who hits first with certainty. And you can shoot.
