The second part of the “Löwenshjelds Trilogy.” Carl-Arthur, a descendant of the Löwenshjelds family—gifted but selfish—gets a position at a parsonage estate. There he falls in love with Charlotte, the clever and hardworking daughter of the local pastor, and proposes to her. But trying to present himself in the best light and trusting someone else’s lies, Carl-Arthur destroys his own happiness with his hands, while Charlotte unsuccessfully tries to save him from the snares of intrigue.
