Summer 1945. In the northern outskirts of Moscow, Father Illarion, a priest of the local parish, is murdered. By all signs, it’s the work of the Gypsies hunting for church valuables. The MUR detectives Ivan Startsev and Aleksandr Vasilkov are ready to accept this version, but there’s one “but”: in the priest’s hand, they find a button from an old uniform of a Finnish officer. The Gypsies don’t have such clothing. The clue comes unexpectedly: someone dressed in a similar tunic has applied to the local hospital… The operatives take up the trail and soon find out that the murder of Father Illarion wasn’t a coincidence, but a planned revenge—its traces run all the way back to the very beginning of the war…
