By the will of fate, our contemporary finds himself in the seventeenth century in the body of a minor German prince—there are plenty of such figures in the Holy Roman Empire. Everything seems fine: Europe is all around. But the good young man cannot sit still in his place. And so, the “not-so-easy” path takes him back to his homeland—right in the thick of the Time of Troubles. And his newly found compatriots think it over and choose the foreign prince as their ruler. Everything seems fine again: sit quietly and reign for glory—but, as the poet said, “peace is what we only dream of.” The borders become restless once more, because it’s insulting to the Polish prince that the Moscow throne went to someone else. And inside the country, the moment you turn your back, the boyars—spoiled during the Time of Troubles—try to stick a knife in your back, shouting: “The tsar isn’t real!”
