Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) is a British writer, author of 28 high-stakes novels and adventure stories, and a screenwriter. He was among the world’s top ten best-selling authors; MacLean’s books sold over 150 million copies, and 18 films were made based on his novels, scripts, and plots. In 1983 the University of Glasgow awarded the writer a degree of Doctor of Literature. From 1941 to 1946 MacLean served in the navy, taking part in military operations and polar convoys, which gave him rich material for his work and determined the themes of his best books.
