Lady Virginia, Countess Eversan-Walters, returns to her manor in Bromley after a long journey. She plans to spend the summer raising Liam, her young ward, who had been a foundling child and is now a fake baronet of Sayer. However, new people appear in the house—a young maid and a governess—and soon Virginia is drawn into an investigation of a series of thefts and murders. She promises to help detective Ellis, not even suspecting that in this case unexpected surprises await her, including ones connected to her own home.
