Every species in the Universe gained consciousness by undergoing Ascension, receiving reason from their alien mentors— their patron races. Every species except humans. Humans headed for the stars on their own, going through their own evolution. Or perhaps some mysterious civilization began the process of Ascension on Earth many millennia ago—and if so, why did it abandon humanity?
Having been cast as outcasts, people try to find their place in the galactic hierarchy—but everything changes when, in the Solar System, another anomaly is discovered: incomprehensible “ghosts” on the Sun, possibly the most incredible form of life known in the explored cosmos. An expedition is sent to study this phenomenon, and it will have to descend into the seething solar inferno. But someone—or something—doesn’t want Earth’s people to succeed, and the inhabitants of the Sun prove far more terrible and mysterious than scientists had believed.
