In the trunk of a Rolls-Royce with two bullets in the back of the head, Tony Aliso—the owner of a Hollywood film studio and an avid card player— is found. Apparently, he was a victim of a mafia attack. To follow up the murder version involving gambling debts or fraud schemes, Los Angeles police detective Harry Bosch heads to Las Vegas.
During the investigation it turns out that not long before his death, the film man was seen at a poker table with Elinor Wish— a former FBI agent, a former prisoner… and the love of Harry’s entire life. Suddenly this case becomes very personal for Bosch, and now he has to “keep his cards close to his chest.”
Meanwhile his enemies multiply, and it’s not only the thugs from Vegas, but also someone from the internal affairs department of the police. But when has danger ever stopped Bosch?
