Vadim is a surgeon and microbiologist who, by the will of fate, finds himself in Petersburg of 1904—in the body of a medical secretary working for a wealthy doctor swindler. In the courtyard wells, gas lamps burn dimly. The horse trams give way to the first automobiles. Filth and luxury, science and spiritualism, beautiful women and fanatic terrorist zealots. Medicine is corrupt. Doctors use treatment with electricity, bloodletting, “golden injections,” magnetism, hypnosis, radon baths, and much more. Tender shoots of real science struggle to break through entrenched habits and superstitions.
