A group of the Invulnerables, the Vulnerables, and the trappers—among them Jacky—overcomes obstacles and reaches the mountain-under city. Now all of them are newcomers, burdened by acclimatization and bewilderment about their further fate. The last “living” city gives the remnants of humanity hope for the possibility of safe survival under the conditions of irreversible collapse, and it instills faith in the possibility not merely of acceptable existence, but of a life without fear of the future. However, every functioning mechanism contains invisible gears—without the hidden existence of which its operation would look different or would be impossible altogether. Once inside the city, Jacky becomes one of those gears; the mechanism changes its usual direction first subtly, and soon irrevocably.
