The novel takes place on the planet Pilgrim in the Savage star system, fifty years before the events on Terrius. Earthmen discover a strange planet where someone “left behind” artifacts in the form of pyramids with an unknown purpose. A young operative, John Rawls, is sent to the Pilgrim on a secret mission. His task is to find out whether the alien structures pose any danger to the lives of three hundred and fifty colonists. The mission seems simple and familiar—but everything changes when, at the appointed time, the colonists don’t come through with contact.
