For the Lonely, Everywhere Is a Desert

The novel “Solitude Everywhere, the Desert” continues the cycle of novels by Václav Mihálský about the fates of two sisters—Maria and Alexandra—begun with the novel “Spring in Carthage.”

For the first time in Russian literature, in the pages of Václav Mihálský’s “Spring in Carthage,” Moscow and Carthage appeared—Russia and Tunisia, Russians, Arabs, Frenchmen. They were united in the fates of the novel’s heroines: the daughters of an admiral of the Russian Imperial Fleet.

In “Solitude Everywhere, the Desert,” the reader meets Maria and Alexandra again, but now in a completely different time—on the threshold of and beyond the start of World War II.
