Harry Hole is in a bad situation — and that’s putting it mildly. In his apartment, a woman has been shot dead, apparently with whom he spent the night. The trouble is that he can’t remember a thing. To make matters worse, Inspector Harry is investigating a bank robbery — a crime that is almost flawless, except that the robber shot the clerk without any visible reason. Hole is sure the murder was deliberate, but his superiors consider it a random coincidence. Harry has no shortage of enemies; many would be happy to set him up, and once again he has to enter a dangerous game with the law in order to defeat evil…
