“On the Back Alleys of the Great Empire” is one of V. S. Pikul’s early novels. It is a panoramic narrative about the life of a provincial Russian town in a fictional, but quite recognizable Uryon Governorate in the early 20th century. The work is written in the spirit of the satire of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, one of Valentin Savvich’s favorite authors. The idea of the novel and the image of the main character—Prince Sergey Yakovlevich Myshetsky—arose for the writer as a result of a long and attentive study of archival documents of the State Duma.
In the novel, the panorama of life in Russian provinces in the early 20th century is revealed. Fans of Valentin Pikul’s talent will get a new meeting with a captivating plot, яркими heroes, and historical realities of our Motherland.
