“On the Back Alleys of the Great Empire” is one of V. S. Pikul’s early novels. It is a panoramic narrative about the life of a provincial Russian town in a fictional, but вполне recognizable Uryon Governorate in the early 20th century. The work is written in the spirit of the satire of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, one of Valentin Savvich’s favorite authors. The idea of the novel and the image of the main character—Prince Sergey Yakovlevich Myshetsky—arose for the writer as a result of a long and attentive study of archival documents of the State Duma.
