Moscow, 1939. The glitter and the poverty of the young Soviet state. Communal apartments, shared kitchens, primuses and squabbles, queues for matches and soap. And nearby, glowing with lights, the “National” hotel—unthinkable luxury for the chosen few: champagne and caviar, ladies in mink coats who were too beautiful in a way that didn’t quite fit the Soviet look, and “comrades” with cigars...
After one of those lavish dinners, the Soviet elite’s circle suffers losses: a well-known journalist, a TASS photo correspondent, and a translator from “Intourist” die one after another—and the murders are carefully concealed from the people. Why? Because in the USSR there is no crime—or for some other completely different reason? And what does this have to do with the night killer who strangles victims, whose trail the MUR’s best operatives are trying to follow?
