The heavy nuclear missile cruiser “Peter the Great” slipped from our times into the South Atlantic of 1982, near the area of the Falklands conflict—the two-hundred-mile zone of the Anglo-Argentine war. Soviet leadership disowned them; the British declared them pirates, and the ship’s crew was forced to fight under the Argentinian flag. But when U.S. intelligence discovered the ship’s unusual origin, the Americans pressured Argentina to refuse their help and tried to seize the valuable artifact. And the cruiser’s commander decided to head for the Pacific Ocean, with the final goal—an USSR Navy base in Vietnam (Cam Ranh).
