One day in Japan’s Ginza district, magical Gates open—through them, troops from an Empire in a parallel world invade the country. In the world beyond the Gates live fairy-tale creatures such as elves and dragons, and some of them can be extremely dangerous. However, on the whole the Empire’s development remains at the level of the Middle Ages, so Japan manages not only to repel the invasion, but also to capture the Gates. Now all countries are interested in using them and seizing the resources of a world that hasn’t yet been touched by modern civilization. Against all odds, Japan tries to hold onto its monopoly. After capturing the Gates, several detachments are created to study the parallel world and establish friendly relations with the local population. The leader of one of these units becomes the main character—Itami Yōji. (с)
