A novel of magical realism.
In the forests of the Wolf Valley, the sprites rule; in the lakes, drowned maidens live; at night, ghosts and vampires roam. This is an secluded place that once belonged to werewolves, but now only terrible folktales remain from them—as well as the ruins of a fortress in the forest. In this valley, each village has its guardian, but the last one died in a fight with нечисть, and now his adopted daughter, the herb woman Venda, is obliged to protect the locals—except for such a burden, she lacks both experience and age. But she has no choice: now she not only takes care of people, but also battles her own fears, doubts, and creeping madness caused by the enormous responsibility. And to make things worse, there’s a rumor that Da Vern, the last werewolf everyone thought was dead, is returning to the valley. And the Wolf Valley is seized by fear, because perhaps Da Vern has come to take revenge for the death of his own children.
